Second Story

Second Story is a bohemian cocktail lounge in historic Covington, Kentucky, aptly located on the second floor. While Covington boasts many cocktail bars, Second Story stands apart with an unmistakable character, rich personality, and distinct brand identity. Conceived by Charity Williamson and Dave Durand, Second Story pays homage to the French bourgeoisie, Parisian salons, and the vibrant, artistic communities of the late 19th century, with a hint of New Orleans mysticism. Spanning over 4,000 square feet, the bar’s meticulously curated design offers an atmosphere that blends grandeur with intimacy.

As the designer for Second Story’s visual brand, my goal was to create elements that feel organic, slightly imperfect, and complementary to the high-end, eclectic interiors. I incorporated hand-drawn elements to lend an artistic, personal touch that contrasts yet harmonizes with the bar’s lavish decor—an intentional play on opposition that gives the brand a natural balance. The logo, inspired by Picasso’s distinctive style, serves as a nod to French artistry and my own admiration for his work. Although Spanish, Picasso’s presence was deeply felt in France’s art world, making him a fitting muse for Second Story’s identity. The brand colors mirror the bar’s interiors, evoking drama, vibrancy, and an air of freedom while remaining carefully curated and distinctly eclectic.

Adding to Second Story’s immersive ambiance, I designed a custom artificial tree system as a focal point behind the bar. This sculptural installation not only holds display bottles but is illuminated with subtle under-lighting and adorned with bright gold accents, exuding the mystique and allure often missing from contemporary spaces. Second Story feels like a living art piece—not only due to its interior design but because it invites patrons to contribute to its evolving narrative. With its unique blend of artistic heritage, design innovation, and welcoming energy, Second Story offers an unforgettable experience that celebrates creativity, individuality, and the vibrant spirit of Covington’s nightlife.
